When my friend and I walked into Wogies Bar and Grill I do remember a game being played on the television but I don’t think it was all that important to the crowd. Two things were obviously more important and that was the food and drinks that groups of friends were enjoying. Wogies is located on the edge of West Village on Greenwich Avenue. It is the type of place you go to when you want to wash off the blues of the workday and spend time with some good people and strike up conversation with the friendly staff.
Wogies boasts that it serves the best wings and cheesesteak in NYC but after looking at the menu and seeing how good everything looked I couldn’t decide on my meal plan.
We decided on two of the more interesting looking items on the menu to share.
1. Garbage Bread
That’s right, the dish comes in either a half or a whole loaf and is stuffed with different types of ingredients depending on which type you order. We opted for the Potato Garbage Bread which was a loaded baked potato baked right into the bread served with mariana sauce.
2. Philly Spring Rolls
Unlike regular spring rolls that are rolled in rice paper and normally light and refreshing, these were fried, savory and cheesy. Filled with grilled steak, onions and Chez Wiz deep fried and served with a cheesy chipotle sauce. My tastebuds had flown out of my mouth and straight to heaven.
The two dishes were certainly some of the best game day food I’ve ever eaten. Some might call it “Man Food” but I put everything away and still wanted seconds. That probably speaks more to my character than the food’s. If I hadn’t walked 15 miles before dining I probably would have been more conscious about the health risks that the food may cause in my future. Just kidding, I will probably frequent Wogies on a weekly basis. As far as I’m concerned the food is good because it’s good for you. That’s the motto.
