I hate people who don’t like desserts. I know hate is a strong word and that is precisely why I’m using it.
We all know that annoying kid who claims to hate dessert. Or perhaps you are that kid. You sit at the opposite end of the table and talk about how cake is gross, or that ice cream never tickled your fancy or perhaps sweets make you feel sick. Ugh, I get it! You think you’re so cool because you hate the food that makes people fat. You can’t stand the food that everyone likes. You must be so hip for hating mainstream wonderful goodness. Now go off to Starbucks and order your unsweetened iced coffee with sugar-free caramel syrup and skim milk.
Okay, I’m sorry for that. Where was I? Oh yeah, so I’ve been tracking down the best desserts I could find. Except, to really narrow down my search, I went ahead and focused on food trucks that catered to my sugar cravings.
First up is something big, gay and creamy. That’s right, I went to the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop. I know I just said I wanted this to be strictly food trucks, but Big Gay has food trucks and two storefronts so everyone can enjoy the Salty Pimps and American Globs.
I got the Salty Pimp featured above and below and on the same day also consumed the American Glob, which is a vanilla ice cream cone with pretzels, sea salt and dipped in chocolate. I can’t decide on a winner because they are equally mouthwatering. I do have to say they were both the best ice cream cones I’ve ever consumed. I know what you’re thinking; how can I say that with such great establishments like Dairy Queen in existence? That was sarcasm. Just trust me on this, okay?
I think it’s also important to mention that the group I was with got in line thirty minutes before the store closed and at that point the line was pretty lengthy. The manager said he’d give us a free ice cream cone if one of us put on an official vest and turned people away. So, essentially one of my friends was an Ice Cream Cop who crushed many hopes and dreams that night.
Next up is Kelvin Natural Slush Co. How it works is you pick a base, like a citrus tea or spicy ginger and then you add a mix-in like strawberry, blueberry, mango etc. On a sizzling summer day in Williamsburg I took some friends to Smorgasburg, a dining experience on the waterfront of East River State Park where food trucks and vendors come in hoards to feed the crowds. I got myself an Arnold Palmer with white peaches and I’ve never been more satisfied. It may have been the searing heat, dehydration or perhaps the quality of the slush itself, but boy was I in ecstasy.
Third on this list is Itizy, a handcrafted ice cream truck. The flavors are limited but nothing short of amazing. From Milk Tea to Brown Butter with Salted Caramel Swirl it will make all the ice cream haters swoon. I encountered this food truck while attending Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival. While everyone was having picnics on the lawn and listening to music before the feature presentations I wanted something to cool me off. I chose Mint Stracciatella for two reason; I always choose mint ice cream over anything and I’m Italian. The dark chocolate flakes where thick enough to leave their intense flavor but thin enough to melt in my mouth.
While these desserts were nothing short of amazing I still have a long list to go including CoolHaus, which I saw on Food Network and have been obsessed with trying it. I even track the truck’s location via twitter everyday like a little loser. Only time will tell…
